Identity

20 February 2019
‘We…saw giants…we felt like grasshoppers.’

We all know how important it is to understand our true identity in God. But how many of us still struggle to see ourselves as God sees us? How many times do we look in the mirror and wish God had created us differently? How many times do we end up comparing ourselves to others? When this is happening, we need to reclaim our identity. We need to soak ourselves in God’s truth and ask Him to help us see ourselves the way He sees us. The Bible tells us that we are ‘children of God’ (1 John 3:1 NIV). We’re chosen and called (take a look at John 15:16). It says we ‘are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness’ (1 Thessalonians 5:5 NIV). We’re ‘more than conquerors’, who can overcome things with God’s help (Romans 8:37 NIV). He sees us as ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ (Psalm 139:14 NIV). In the Bible, we read about the twelve spies being sent into the Promised Land. On their return, 10 of them said, ‘We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them’ (Numbers 13:33 NIV). But the other two, Joshua and Caleb, said ‘We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it’ (Numbers 13:30 NIV). Joshua and Caleb got it right. They saw themselves how God saw them. They recognised that with God, they can overcome things. When we see ourselves through our own eyes, we think like those 10 spies. But when we see ourselves like God sees us, we know that we can do whatever He calls us to do.
