Telling people about God (1)

12 July 2018
‘The large crowd listened to him with delight.’

On one of the occasions when Jesus was teaching, the Bible tells us that ‘the large crowd listened to him with delight’ (Mark 12:37 NIV). And there were lots of other times when Jesus drew a large crowd; we know that He had to feed 5,000 people who had come to hear Him speak. And John 12:9 tells us that ‘when all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead’ (NLT). Something about what Jesus was saying resonated with the people, and made them want to hear more. Maybe they were just curious at first, but when they listened to what He had to say, they began to recognise and respond to the truth that Jesus was teaching. Telling others about God is something we often find very difficult. Even if we’re not speaking to a large crowd like Jesus did, just telling one person can be hard. We might fear being judged, or worry about being asked a tricky question that we can’t answer. There are all kinds of excuses we could come up with. But one of Jesus’ last commands was: ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation’ (Mark 16:15 NIV). It’s something we're all called to do. So if we're nervous about it, and not sure where to start, what can we do? The most important thing is to tell the truth. Tell people about what you've learned from the Bible. Tell them about Jesus and what He means to you. Don't set out to convince people - just tell them what you know about God, and trust Him to work on their hearts. When you tell the truth, people will respond to it, just like they did to Jesus.
